Festival of Music next Tuesday. Saint Cecilia

Saint Cecilia (Latin: Sancta Caecilia) is the patron saint of musicians and Church music because as she was dying she sang to God. It is also written that as the musicians played at her wedding she "sang in her heart to the Lord". St. Cecilia was an only child. Her feast day is celebrated in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches on November 22. She is one of seven women, excluding the Blessed Virgin, remembered by name in the Canon of the Mass. It was thought that she was a noble lady of Rome who, with her husband Valerian, his brother Tiburtius, and a Roman soldier Maximus, suffered martyrdom, c. 230, under the Emperor Alexander Severus.

Spanish boots of Spanish leather.

Nowadays, we travel all over the world, and there are very few places that we can't visit.
But before the age of air travel the world was full of mysterious places that people knew very little about. Spain was especially mysterious, because it was a closed society, and the only images that reached the outside world were photographs of Andalucia, and the poetry of Lorca, peasant villages and dark eyed dancing girls, mule trains and orange groves. Spain was something Dylan had only read about; so when he writes a love song about a girl who's going away he sings of; "the mountains of Madrid, and the coast of Barcelona" and because he knows that she isn't coming back, he asks her to send him something to remember her by; "Spanish boots of Spanish leather"
Enjoy this great song!

Solidarity with our friends in America.

Ten years ago, something truly awful happened in the U.S.A. Some people say; "These horrible things are happening every day in other parts of the world and nobody cares"

This is true, but it's also true that "charity begins at home", which means that we start to care about the world outside of our personal lives by caring about the people who are closest to us.

Summer holidays are here!!

I should better say that summer holidays are there, because here the school year finishes at the end of July. Students will be on holiday from the 27th, for a bit longer than a month, until the beginning of September. Don't think we are very lucky and we have longer time without going to school. Schools in England have the Christmas break, the Easter break and summer break as we do, but they also have a week off at the end of October, another one in February and another one in June. So at the end, they go to school more or less the same number of days, but they divide the terms in a different way.

I think tomorrow is your last day at school! I only want to wish you all a great summer! Enjoy!!And see you in September!

Monday 20 June 2011

GOING OUT TO EAT SOMETHING?

Anyone coming to the UK should go to a pub to have lunch or dinner! Most of them serve food everyday from the morning untill 9 pm. Some stop serving at 8, which is quite early if you follow the spanish timetable. At pubs, it's curious that you always have to order at the bar, and say the table number where you are sitting. If you don't they will not come to you. The most famous English meal is Sunday Roast. I can say it's lovely!!! I'm going to miss it when I go back!

In weekdays, there are normally offers at all restaurants and pubs. This way, you can find Monday is the steak day, Tuesday the curry day, and so on only for 4.99 pounds.

I also like that pubs normally have a different activity each day. Most of them organize the week so people can go and try different things, apart from food. There is always once per week Karaoke night, Quiz night, Open mic night... I'm going to try to go to a Quiz night and record a video, so you can see it! You can win money if you are very smart and guess all the answers!
Don't you find this a bit different from our pintxos bars?

Monday 6 June 2011

Trekkers and canoists are cool! Well done if your legs and arms hurt!

Well done to you all who made it to the top of Atxarre today. You might like to know that you walked a total of 10 kilometres, in about 45 minutes, which is prety good, given how steep the path is.
I'm publishing these pictures for the benefit of the very small number of students who were too lazy to get to the top, so that they can enjoy the amazing views too!
More pictures soon.

Physical (corporal) punishment in schools around the world

Here's a great article about corporal punishment in schools in different countries around the world. As you will read,we're lucky enough to be live in a country which is in the "Premier League" of countries where children's rights are protected.Surprisingly, the U.S.A is in the 3rd division! Anything missing?

The picture is not a very good one, but can you spot any difference between the windows in your house and these?
The blinds, that we call persianas, do not exist anywhere but in Spain, or at least not in England.
They like to take advantage of the light. This way, they normally wake up at around 6 am and go to bed earlier than us, around 10 pm. What is really surprising is that in June the sunrise is at 4.30 am, and they don't need anything to stop the light coming in!! They normally have sutters and blinds like the ones we have at school!

Guggenheim's creator designs; "The melting skyscraper"

News from England!

Hi everyone!

As some of you might know I'm living in the south of England, in a town called Southampton. I've been here for over a year and a half and I'm working as a Spanish teacher at 3 schools.

From now on I'll be writing here English curiosities, things that I like and don't like, what it is like to live in this country, etc. If you have any questions about living here I'd love to answer them!

This is a picture of Southampton, Bargate, right in the city centre

Breaking News!!!!!!

More evidence of Merced teacher's secret life!!

More evidence has emerged that the Merced teacher who calls himself "Gorka" is in fact pop superstar Dylan.

Our chief paparazzi followed him to London this weekend where he went to make a new video.

As you can see he isn't very happy to be recognised by our reporter.

The rock and roll superstar had to escape from his fans when they recognised him . He got into a taxi and disappeared.

Our chief paparazzi found him again and asked him if it was true that he was Dylan, the rock giant, and that he was hiding in the mountains of Bizkaia from his fans because he was bored with so many wild Hollywood parties and girls.
He replied; "The answer to that is blowing in the wind"

Here is "Gorka's" latest video

Teacher's team announce counter-attack signing!!!

Breaking News!!!

The Merced sports desk has just learned that the teacher's team is about to announce a new signing for it's annual match against Merced students.
It seems that the teachers have signed Georgie "Best" Ciscar, a homegrown talent, but who spent last year in london clubs, in and around Chelsea, learning his trade as a talented and creative clubber.
Merced teacher's manager, Javi "science can be fun" Martin commented that Georgie's arrival in the team would be very positive and that Georgie's creativity, and the solidity of "Asi Martinez" in midfield would allow veteran players such as goalkeeper Richie "el gato de Birmingham" and Igor "victory or death" Villarchao to feel confident about winning their 6th consecutive trophy.

This is something for the surfers

This is nice. It's a video of the surfing at Waimea river in Hawaii USA.
It seems that there is a river that flows into the sea, but that it is blocked for most of the year by waves pushing sand to make a wall that stops the river flowing into the sea.
Then somebody makes a small hole and a channel in this wall, and the millions of litres of river water come flooding out. Ideal for surfing. the music is cool too.

Exclusive report reveals Merced teacher has secret life!!

Our reporter has discovered that the Merced teacher who calls himself "Gorka" is in fact George Dylan, a famous Rock and Roll star from the U.S.A.

Some students and teachers had already suspected that this teacher has a secret life, and believe that superstar George is tired of his Rock and Roll lifestyle and so comes to Lañomendi to hide from his millions of fans.
